The First Burn — A Candle Care Guide

The First Burn Matters Most

Your Bailao & Co. candle is hand-poured with a dense blend of beeswax and coconut wax — richer and heavier than the paraffin or soy blends most candles are made from. That density is exactly what gives our candles their long burn time and clean scent throw. It also means the first few burns need a little more patience than you might be used to.

Burns 1–3: Let It Go the Distance

For each of the first two to three burns, let your candle burn for 1–3 hours — long enough for the wax to melt evenly from side to side of the jar, right out to the glass. This is what candle-makers call priming the candle, and it's the single most important step in caring for it.

If you extinguish the candle too early on those first burns, the wax only melts in the center, leaving hard, unmelted wax around the edges. Once that happens, every burn after it will keep melting only that same narrow well — a problem called tunneling. A tunneled candle burns unevenly, wastes wax, and never gives you the full, even glow it's capable of.

Why the Flame Looks Different

Because beeswax and coconut wax are denser than most other waxes, the flame on your Bailao candle may look smaller or quieter than you'd expect from a paraffin candle. This is completely normal — it's simply a denser fuel burning steadily rather than fast. In exchange, you'll notice something paraffin candles don't offer: a gentle, natural crackling sound and warm, flickering light from the wooden wick, closer to the sound of a small fireplace than a typical candle.

Ongoing Care

  • Trim the wick to approximately 0.5 cm before each burn to keep the flame steady and prevent excess smoke.
  • Burn on a heat-safe, level surface, away from drafts, curtains, and anything flammable.
  • Avoid burning for more than 3–4 hours at a time, even after the candle is fully primed.
  • Discontinue use once approximately 1 cm of wax remains at the base, to protect the vessel and your space.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep out of reach of children and pets.

The Making of a Bailao Candle

A Bailao candle is not made in a day, and it was never meant to be. Where most candles are poured and shipped within 24 hours, ours ask for something closer to three weeks — because beeswax rewards patience, and we've chosen not to rush it.

  • Days 1–14: Each fragrance blend is composed, then left to rest and settle for 8–14 days, allowing the notes to fully marry before they ever meet the wax.
  • The pour: Pure beeswax is melted and blended with coconut wax, our vessels are cleaned, and each one is hand-wicked with a wooden wick before the blended wax is poured.
  • Days 15–22: Every candle is left to cure and set for a further 7 days before labelling — this is what allows the wax to fully stabilise and the scent to settle evenly through the jar.
  • Final check: One candle from every fragrance, batch, and label run is test-burned before anything is approved for packaging and shipping.

This is not how other waxes work — most can be poured, labelled, and shipped the same day. Beeswax asks for more. We think that's part of what makes it worth choosing.

Why Beeswax

  • The closest light to the sun. Beeswax burns with a warm, full-spectrum light long said to be the closest of any candle to natural sunlight — gentler on the eyes than the artificial light most of us sit under all day.
  • It burns longer. Because beeswax is denser than paraffin or soy, it burns slower and drips less — more hours of light from the same size candle.
  • It's said to be kinder to breathe around. Burning beeswax releases negative ions, traditionally believed to help clear allergens and impurities from the air around it.
  • It burns clean. Beeswax produces very little soot compared to paraffin, so it won't leave the dark residue other candles can leave on walls and ceilings over time.
  • Nothing goes to waste. Beeswax is a byproduct of honey production — using it here means less is wasted, not more is taken. It's the same wax burned in temples and homes by our ancestors for centuries, long believed to carry a higher, purer frequency than any other light source.

Treat each burn as a small ritual, not a rush — that patience is exactly what the first few burns, and the candle itself, are asking of you.
